Vice Squad is an English punk rock band that formed in Bristol in 1979. The original lineup consisted of Beki Bondage on vocals, Dave Bateman on guitar, Mark Hambly on bass guitar, and Shane Baldwin on drums. The band’s first release was the track “Nothing” on the 1979 compilation Avon Calling. They signed with the Riot City label, which was co-founded by members of the band, and released their first single “Last Rockers” in 1981. The single sold over 20,000 copies and spent almost forty weeks in the UK Indie Chart, reaching number 7. Their second album, Stand Strong Stand Proud, followed in 1982, and the band embarked on a tour of the United States and Canada.
In 1985, the band split up after Bondage left to front other bands. She reformed Vice Squad in 1997 with former members of The Bombshells and released several albums and toured Europe and the United States. They released the album Defiant in 2006, produced by Paul Rooney.
In 2008, the band recorded an album called Fairground for the Demented, but it was shelved as the band decided the finished collection of songs did not represent the ‘Old School’ punk sound they wanted to achieve. In 2009, they released the album London Underground, which was co-produced by Bond and Rooney and received positive reviews. They toured the western states of America to promote the album.
The band released the album Cardboard Country in 2014, which was funded through their first ever PledgeMusic campaign. In 2018, they started recording the album Battle of Britain, which was released in October 2020. During the UK lockdown in 2020, the band launched The Beki and Lumpy Show on Facebook, featuring Bondage and Rooney with videos, chat, and quizzes, broadcasting every Saturday evening.
